Qingdao is doable for planned monthly specialist trips. It is not workable for a parent who needs weekly tertiary care.

  • Walkable Weihai city core. Established neighbourhoods with parks and markets.

Daily-life risks

  • Cold, windy winters. January average lows -5 to -8°C with strong sea wind. Many sea-view compounds have inadequate insulation.
  • Seasonal isolation. Resort compounds drop to 20% to 35% occupancy in winter. Dead streets, weak helper supply, slow property management.
  • Limited international or English-language services. English is rare; signage often Chinese only.
  • Helper supply is the weakest of the candidate cities. Plan for difficulty.
  • Limited medical depth. Two tiers below GBA or Yangtze Delta.
  • Distance from major airports. Weihai Airport has limited routes; Qingdao Airport (~3 hours) for major international.

  • Assuming Qingdao is close enough for serious specialist care. Workable monthly, not weekly.
  • Buying without testing the central heating connection. Some older or non-standard compounds have inadequate winter heat.
  • Choosing Weihai for southern-origin parents who have never lived through northern winter. Climate mismatch is the most common reason these plans collapse.
